From one of the most influential and respected broadcast journalists of all time comes a dramatic and inspirational book profiling 15 extraordinary men and women who have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Congressional Medal of Honor is Americas highest military award. In this remarkable work, the first of its kind, acclaimed 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace looks at the lives of the recipients of the medal and explores what it is that drove them to go so far above and beyond the call of duty. Wallace examines not only their extraordinary feats in battle (plunging into heavy fire, throwing themselves on live grenades, attacking enemy regiments single-handed), but also their lives before and after. Throughout the book, and particularly in his moving introduction, he meditates on the meaning of courage and shows what we can learn from the lives of those who perform amazing acts of selflessness and bravery. Just a few of the Medal of Honor recipients featured in the book:
  • When a group of eight U.S. soldiers in World War II reached a rock wall within view of dug-in German troops, Lieutenant Ernest Childers advanced across the field alone. After killing two snipers and capturing one of the enemy machine gun positions, he advanced on the second position, but came under fire and exhausted his ammunition. Instinctively, he reached for a rock and threw it at the enemy. Thinking it was a grenade, two Germans jumped out of the foxhole -- and Childers shot them both.
  • Civil War doctor Mary Walker , the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor, fought diligently for womens suffrage and against laws designed to oppress women, only to be ostracized by the womens movement and see her government strip her of her medal.
  • Julian Scott signed up to serve in the Union Army at age 15. When he returned home as a wounded hero, his artistic talent led him to a date with destiny in the form of a wealthy patron. He found fame, but after years of struggling with alcoholism and separation from his wife, he became one of historys most talented has-beens.
  • Desmond Doss insisted that he be allowed to serve, but he refused to carry a rifle. Doss was a religious pacifist, ridiculed by his company for his constant Bible study and his supposed cowardice. But then this World War II medic saved over a hundred lives in a single day under heavy fire.

YESTERDAY'S HEROES contains all 433 Medal of Honor citations such as this excerpt: ... Although machinegun bullets kicked up the dirt at his heels, and 88mm shells exploded within 30 yards of him, Pfc. Dutko nevertheless made his way to a point within 30 yards of the first enemy machinegun and killed both gunners with a handgrenade. Although the second machinegun wounded him, knocking him to the ground, Pfc. Dutko regained his feet and advanced on the 88-mm gun, firing his Browning automatic from the hip. When he came within 10 yards of this weapon he killed its 5-man crew with 1 long burst of fire. Wheeling on the machinegun which had wounded him, Pfc. Dutko killed the gunner and his assistant. The third German machine gun fired on Pfc. Dutko from a position 20 yards distant wounding him a second time as he proceeded toward the enemy weapon in a half run. Along with the citations are Official Communiques from the front, and newspaper accounts of various battles. Yesterday's Heroes is a dramatic look at the courage of the American soldier in World War II. Kenneth Jordan is also the author of Heroes of Our Time: 239 Men of the Vietnam War Awarded the Medal of Honor 1964-1972, and Forgotten Heroes: 131 Men of the Korean War Awarded the Medal of Honor 1950-1953 (both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).

Valor Across the Lone Star: The Congressional Medal of Honor in Frontier Texas
By Charles M. Neal Jr., foreword by Jerry Thompson

Books About the Congressional Medal of Honor Recipients - Dust jacket of Valor Across the Lone Star: The Congressional Medal of Honor in Frontier Texas

In Valor Across the Lone Star: The Congressional Medal of Honor in Frontier Texas, author Charles M. Neal Jr. takes us back to the Texas frontier during the years of the Civil War and the Texas Indian Wars .

Neal relates in extraordinary detail the exploits of United States soldiers and sailors in battle. Union sail George Bell, although wounded in an assault on the CSS Royal Yacht in Galveston Bay, forced fleeing crew members to return their launch to the ship to rescue other sailors, then guided the launch away from the scene to safety. John Ward reminded fellow Seminole-Negro scouts Pompey Factor and Isaac Payne , "We can't leave the Lieutenant, boys!" and Factor and Payne provided the covering fire necessary for Ward to rescue Lt. John L. Bullis, who had fallen from his horse, when the four-man detachment was outgunned at the Eagle Nest Crossing of the Pecos River.

Neal has, in the words of noted historian Jerry Thompson, "produced an excellent survey of brave and exemplary men." Valor Across the Lone Star includes several appendices that list all Texas medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War to the present, their burial sites around the world, the location of their deeds, and other statistics. This reliable and engaging volume makes an important contribution to our understanding of the Texas military frontier.

An air force veteran and classroom teacher of U.S. and Texas history for many years, Charles M. Neal Jr. has spent decades researching the topic in remarkable depth and breadth.
