Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient
First Sergeant George Washington Roosevelt

The Medal of Honor was born out of the need to recognize the valor exhibited by soldiers in the Civil War and nowhere were actions of bravery and courage in the war recognized more than at the Battle of Gettysburg . In all, 63 medals were awarded to soldiers for their actions on the battlefield of southern Pennsylvania. First Sergeant George Washington Roosevelt, Uncle of President Theodore Roosevelt and Grandfather of Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. , was one of them.

Rank and organization: First Sergeant, Company K. 26th Pennsylvania Infantry. Place and date: At Bull Run, Va., 30 August 1862. At Gettysburg, Pa., 2 July 1863. Entered service at: Chester Pa. Birth: Chester, Pa. Date of issue: 2 July 1887. Citation: At Bull Run, Va., recaptured the colors, which had been seized by the enemy. At Gettysburg, he captured a Confederate color bearer and colors, in which effort he was severely wounded.
