Interim Awards Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Seaman James Carey, US Navy

Interim Awards Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Seaman James Carey, US Navy - Halftone reproduction of a photograph, published in "Deeds of Valor", Volume II, page 97, by the Perrien-Keydel Company, Detroit, 1907.

James Carey was born Ireland in 1847 (1844 in another source), and later served in the U.S. Navy. In about 1870, while a member of the crew of USS Huron, he saved three fellow crewmen from drowning and was awarded the Medal of Honor.

The printed record provides no further details, and is therefore ambiguous about which ship was involved. There were two ships of the name, neither of which was in service in 1870: USS Huron (1862-1869), which was last in commission in October 1868, and USS Huron (1875-1877), which was wrecked in November 1877.
