Cabin Boy John Angling, U.S. Navy

US Army Medal of Honor, 1865

The Army had no monopoly on youthful heroes. Two of the youngest recipients of the Navy Medal of Honor were Cabin Boy John Angling of the USS Pontoosuc and Second Class Boy Oscar Peck of the USS Varuna. Both were 14 years old when they earned their decorations.

John served as a Cabin Boy in the Union Navy. His true name was John Anglin. His citation reads "Served on board the USS Pontoosuc during the capture of Fort Fisher and Wilmington, 24 December 1864 to 22 January 1865. Carrying out his duties faithfully during this period, C.B. Angling was recommended for gallantry and skill and for his cool courage while under the fire of the enemy throughout these various actions."
