Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient

Second Class Boy Oscar E. Peck, U.S. Navy

US Army Medal of Honor, 1865

The Army had no monopoly on youthful heroes. Two of the youngest recipients of the Navy Medal of Honor were Cabin Boy John Angling of the USS Pontoosuc and Second Class Boy Oscar Peck of the USS Varuna. Both were 14 years old when they earned their decorations.

Acting as powder boy of the after rifle, Peck served gallantly while the Varuna was repeatedly attacked and rammed and finally sunk. This was an extremely close-range action and, although badly damaged, the Varuna delivered shells abaft the Morgan's armor."
