Medal of Honor features an exciting campaign set in modern day Afghanistan. During the campaign, you take on the role of several different characters as the story unfolds. The campaign can be challenging as you’re always outnumbered. I had the opportunity to play through the game and experience combat as a Tier 1 operator, and found several tactics that worked well against the enemy. What I learned during the heat of battle should be shared with others. Now you can know insights and tactics that helped me stay alive and should help you thrive. I can confidently say, after reading the info below you’ll be able to survive in battle against insurgents and also complete your assigned objectives.

Iron Sights
As you walk around during the game, you carry your weapon at chest level. A targeting reticule appears on the screen to show an approximate area your bullets will hit when you fire. However, firing "from the hip" is not very accurate—especially when moving. Therefore, in order to improve your accuracy, use your iron sights.

With the press of a button, you bring the weapon up to your shoulder so you can look down the sights. Most of your rifles are equipped with a scope or other optical sight to help with targeting. Firing in iron sights mode is much more accurate, so get in the habit of quickly bring up the sights, aiming, and then firing. You will get more kills with fewer rounds.

Night Operations
Several of the missions in the campaign take place at night and some of the daylight missions have areas where you must operate in the dark. Your characters are all equipped with NODS night vision devices. These let you see effectively in the dark.

Since most of your enemies are not so equipped, the darkness is your friend. When you fire in the dark, the muzzle flash from your weapon will alert enemies to your location. Therefore if you want to keep them "in the dark", move in and make melee kills with your knife to clear out several enemies without giving away your position.

Peeking and Leaning
Cover is an important part of the game. If you try to fight while out in the open, you are just asking for a body bag with your name on it. Whenever enemies are around, get behind some cover. Once there, you can use the peek and lean ability to minimize your exposure as you engage enemies. Holding down the peek and lean button essentially locks your feet in place. Then as you move, you can peek up to look over cover or lean to the sides to see around the cover. You can even peek under an object such as a vehicle. Combine peek and lean with iron sights and you can really put the hurt on the enemy while keeping yourself safer.

Teamwork
During most missions, you will be operating as part of a team—with a single team mate or as a part of a four man team. Teams offer suppressing fire, communication and are important for those times you might be looking in the wrong direction. Take off ahead of them and you’re facing a lot of hostiles on your own. If they’re staying back, there may be a threat ahead and want to engage it from a distance before moving forward.

One advantage of staying with your team is their additional firepower. Your teammates will take out tangos along with you—they are not just there for looks. In addition, they can help by calling out threats for you. Listen to what they say—especially if they are telling you to target a hostile with an RPG or other heavy weapon. Another advantage to staying with your team is that they can provide extra ammo for your weapons when you are low. Just walk up to a teammate and follow the on screen prompts to re-supply.

Tier 1 Mode
After you’ve completed a mission in the campaign, you can then play that same mission in Tier 1 mode. This is a more realistic and challenging mode. It is also timed so that you can compare your time with your friends and other people in the Medal of Honor community. Each mission has a par time. If you can beat this time, you earn a medal for that mission. In Tier 1 mode, it’s easier to die and there are no checkpoints. If you die, you must start the mission over from the beginning. Therefore, you have to use caution and really stay behind cover or your mission will not last very long. While this may seem at odds with trying to get through the mission as quickly as possible, a Tier 1 operator must find the perfect balance between caution and speed.

During Tier 1 mode missions, you are actually rewarded for some actions that can make it worth your while to slow down a bit. When you perform a skill kill, the timer freezes for a few seconds. The more skill kills you get in a row or within a short amount of time, the longer you can freeze the timer. So get in behind some cover, lean around the side and make headshots to freeze the time. When moving through a dark building, use your knife to freeze time as you run around and silently kill the enemies. While a few seconds here and there may not seem like much, they really add up over the course of a mission and can mean the difference for beating the par time.

In Tier 1 mode, your teammates do NOT carry extra ammo for. Therefore, you either have to conserve your ammo or find other weapons. When an enemy is killed, he will leave his weapon behind. You can then pick it up and switch it out for one of the two weapons you can carry. With a captured weapon, you pick up additional ammo by walking over a dropped weapon of the same type. Since most enemies carry the same weapon, you can usually find a lot of ammo in this manner.

For more tactics and strategies, the complete strategy guide releasing on October 12th will be available in print and digital formats here. It provides everything you need to achieve Tier 1 status, including labeled maps for all game modes as well as details on each class, weapon, and support action.
